History of Oktoberfest

annual opening parade called "einzug der wirte" of the oktoberfest

Oktoberfest originated in Munich, Germany, in 1810 to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and his wife, Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. The official wedding celebrations lasted 5 days and concluded with a horse race. An enormous festive atmosphere filled the town, including a parade of the marksmen of the National Guard, music with kettle drums and trumpets, and plenty of eating and drinking.

Munich’s Oktoberfest involves parades, Bavarian food, traditional attire like lederhosen for men and dirndls for women, polkas and waltzes, and beer gardens. Present Bavarian festivities include a variety of these activities, from family-friendly games and parades to lively beer garden celebrations.

Plan for a Sober Ride Home

Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Impaired driving traffic deaths increased by 16% from 2020. If you plan on consuming alcoholic beverages at Oktoberfest events, arrange a designated driver or schedule a rideshare service, and ensure you have a sober ride home.

The San Diego Trolley offers convenient transportation from major downtown spots such as the Santa Fe Depot and the San Diego Convention Center, with routes spanning across the city to areas like Old Town, Mission Valley, El Cajon, Santee, and San Ysidro, near the Mexican border.

Ensure You Are Well-Rested

Fatigue greatly affects both judgment and reaction time, so it’s important to be well-rested before driving and stay alert to the behavior of other vehicles on the road.

A study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that around 328,000 crashes caused by drowsy driving occur annually—three times higher than the number reported by law enforcement. In fact, the true number of fatalities due to drowsy driving is estimated to be over 350% higher than reported figures.

Wear Your Seat Belt

Always buckle up and make sure all passengers do as well. Seat belts provide the best protection against injuries in the event of a crash. Studies estimate that wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of death by 45% for front-seat occupants and lowers the likelihood of moderate to severe injury by 50%.

Be Extra Careful Driving During Peak Traffic Times and at Nighttime

Oktoberfest is a fun an exciting time but it can also lead to heavily congested roads. It’s crucial to be alert, especially when driving at night. In the US, nearly half of all traffic fatalities occur at nighttime. According to recent data, fatal crashes are more common between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. in California.
